History: In his youth, Matt had, apparently, a relatively happy childhood, attending school and playing with his younger brother, TK. At this point, he was a cheerful child and fairly well-adjusted. This changed instantly, however, when his parents split up, his mother taking TK and relocating to a different section of Tokyo, leaving Matt with his father, a television executive/office worker. Due to their separation, Matt didn't get to spend much time with TK until the events of Digimon Adventure where, while on a seemingly uneventful trip to summer camp, he and his brother and five (later six) other children were whisked away to a fanciful world where nearly everything attempted to kill them.

In the Digital World, Matt was introduced to Gabumon, his personal Digimon partner-- it is heavily implied that Gabumon was his first real friend. Through a series of perilous misadventures, Matt and Gabumon became fast friends, and Matt nearly died several times. In the process of exploring the Digital World, Matt was split off from the group several times. The first time, he wound up on an island with Tai, another Chosen Child, and was frantic to find his brother. After the team reconvened, Matt eventually received the Crest of Friendship, but couldn't use it until after the team had split up the second time. At this point, Matt voluntarily left TK at a theme park while he went to scout the area, but wound up getting entangled in a friend's restauraunt debts, and stayed to help him work it off; the ensuing conflict helped give him a greater understanding of his Crest.

Later, when the Chosen Children had been taken back to the "real world", Matt helped save Odaiba from the evil Myotismon, who had been systematically capturing and preying upon the citizens of the town. This incident left a portal to the Digital World open in the sky, and the children went back to destroy the Dark Masters. During this time, Matt was able to help Gabumon digivolve to the highest possible level through his strength of heart.

After the defeat of the Dark Masters, Matt returned home, and the portal to the Digital World was closed, apparently forever. However, the next summer, a virus-type digimon called Keramon began destroying the internet, and Matt and Tai were called upon to stop it. Shenanigans happened, Gabumon almost died, Matt went into the internet through the power of love and revived him.
Personality: Matt is, basically, one of those people who just loves everyone so damn much but would probably rather throw himself off a cliff into the ocean and sink dourly to the bottom of the sea than actually admit it. Matt does not know how to feelings! This is a kid who spends all of the first season of Adventure going on about how he wants to protect his brother, how he wants to protect his friends, how their friends and their safety is always most important, while also claiming to not understand friendship at all and struggling to accept his crest, which was of the Friendship aspect.

Probably because of his parents early break-up, Matt has a hard time telling apart fleeting emotional connections from real relationships, which he longs for deeply. He forms attachments to people quickly, and as previously stated tends to worry overmuch about protecting them, but it takes far longer for him to trust that the other person likes and values him as well. For example, early in Adventure he becomes jealous of Tai for spending time with his brother, and immediately jumps to the conclusion that TK must like Tai better than him! Of course! Of course he's been left behind and abandoned again, what other explanation could there be?

All of this feeds into the rather quick-tempered, standoffish side of his personality-- traits that he does not particularly like about himself. Matt is quick to start or escalate heated fights when the subject is something he cares about deeply (for example, the safety of his brother and their other party members), though when faced with a potentially dangerous situation his suggestions are more often slanted towards caution. While he can be snappish, and occasionally sarcastic and snide, it's obvious that these things come from a place of high sensitivity and emotion. He has a strong sense of justice and, secretly, a very vulnerable emotional side that he attempts to tamp down. In one of the music CDs, he and Gabumon have a very telling duet where Gabumon sings that Matt wears his coolkid personality like his partner wears his fur: as a defense mechanism, to hide himself and the parts of his personality that he is embarrassed or vulnerable about. Matt is the sort of person who prefers to express his emotions physically rather than verbally-- anger with punches, love through ceaseless, dogged protection.

Despite the issues he has in believing that other people truly care for him, Matt is a loyal and steadfast friend.
Abilities & physical limitations: Matt has no special physical abilities, and his strengths and limitations are basically that of any thirteen year-old boy, given that all his combat experience required a partner to actually do any fighting. He is fairly physically fit for his age, however, and is capable of climbing rocks and running moderately long distances. He is a very capable swimmer.

Planet: Land of Cold and Pine. A mountainous, densely forested planet in the style of Japanese mountain ranges; was once lit by what appeared to be an eternal full moon, which the Denizen, the wolf Fenrir, has eaten. The Denizen has also ushered in an ice age, and everything is now covered in frost and deep drifts of snow. The consorts are sly foxes who have taken to lighting the treacherous passageways with lanterns of eery blue fox fire (in the manner of Garurumon, whose primary attack in the original Japanese was called "Fox Fire" and was literally a gout of blue fire).

RP Sample:
Matt woke up half-buried in a drift of snow where the road outside his apartment had once and by all rights still should have been, up to his neck in the ice and the cold with soft flakes of it mussed and melting through his hair, the chill barely touching him in the wake of a wave of nostalgia. Thirty seconds of consciousness in and this was seeming creepingly familiar. He half expected to get up, brush himself off, and find his friends gathered around, waiting impatiently for him to rouse himself.

Yes, Yamato Ishida was glaringly familiar with the sensation of waking up in a brand-new world. He was not, in point of fact, overly fond of it.

When he managed to sit up, arms numb from the cold and a drift of sleet down the front of his shirt, the sprite was hovering ominously there, emitting a phosphorescent glow. His cheerfully luminous nature did little to ameliorate the impression that he was no more than the ghost of his best friend, a mocking effigy of his partner. If he'd failed in that, if Gabumon was dead--

He wouldn't think on it. He couldn't make himself; just the bare idea made him hot in the heart and pained in his chest, mildly short of breath. On shaking legs he forced himself up, forced himself to look around and survey the steep cliffs and the sharp jags that awaited him on the way down, should he lose his perilous footing and slip. His brother was, as far as he knew, safe at home, sleeping off a sugar high. Tai was back in Odaiba, and Sora, and the rest of his team. (And Gabumon was--) There was no one here to worry about but himself, and a vast wide world to explore, and a nagging hunger for food as well as warmth.

Matt picked a direction that seemed promising and, glancing at his silent sprite to make sure he followed, started walking.
